Local Crossroad Bridge Projects
Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90)
Local Crossroad Bridge Projects
Project Overview
In 2016, the Illinois Tollway will complete reconstruction of local crossroad bridges carrying traffic over the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) to accommodate the new, wider I-90 roadway. Altogether, 30 local bridges will be reconstructed as part of the I-90 Rebuilding and Widening Project.
The Illinois Tollway completed reconstruction of seven local crossroad bridges in 2013, nine in 2014 and three in 2015. Four local crossroad bridges are scheduled for completion in 2016. In addition, seven local crossroad bridges are being reconstructed as part of interchange reconstruction projects scheduled for completion this year.
Construction in 2016 also includes, ramp repair work at the U.S. Route 20 Interchange in Hampshire and Randall Road Interchange in Elgin.
Project Resources
Construction Update (07-15-16)
In Elgin, ramp pavement repairs are scheduled at the Randall Road Interchange this summer. Traffic shifts will be in place through fall. All ramps will remain open.
In Gilberts, the Higgins Road Bridge (Illinois Route 72) has reopened to traffic. Work continues to complete site cleanup and landscaping.
In Hoffman Estates, work on the Higgins Road Bridge (Illinois Route 72) is complete.
In Hampshire, traffic on the westbound entrance and exit ramps at the U.S. Route 20 Interchange is shifted for pavement repair work scheduled through August. All ramps will remain open.
In Boone County, the Tripp Road and Spring Center Road Bridges are closed through the end of the year for reconstruction. No detour routes are posted.
Project Summary
Local crossroad bridges to be removed and reconstructed in 2016 include Tripp Road and Spring Center Road in Boone County. Both bridges are being reconstructed with concrete beams with one lane in both directions and shoulders.
Work on the Higgins Road Bridges (Illinois Route 72) in Hoffman Estates and in Gilberts are continuing into 2016.
In addition, at U.S. Route 20 in Hampshire and at Randall Road in Elgin, ramp repairs are scheduled and include concrete pavement patching, shoulder replacement, crack sealing and restoration work. All ramps will remain open during construction and repairs will be completed with traffic shifts.
Traffic Impacts
Closure of the local crossroad bridges is necessary because the bridge structures are not wide enough to maintain traffic and provide a work zone. In addition to providing a safe work zone for construction workers and drivers, closure of the bridges will allow work to be complete in half the time.
The Higgins Road Bridges in both Hoffman Estates and Gilberts remain open during construction, with traffic lanes reduced and shifted to provide room for the work zone.
Purpose
The local crossroad bridges are being reconstructed to accommodate the rebuilding and widening of the I-90 roadway below. This work is part of the Tollway's 15-year, $12 billion capital program, Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future.
The local crossroad bridge projects are being coordinated with Winnebago, Boone, DeKalb, McHenry, Kane and Cook counties and the Illinois Department of Transportation, along with local municipalities, townships, school districts and police and fire departments.
Building Green
The Tollway is committed to "Building Green" and minimizing the environmental impact of construction by reducing, recycling and reusing materials. All materials from the old bridges will be removed and recycled, reducing the volume of material that would otherwise be sent to landfills.
Work Zone Safety
Construction zone speed limits are in effect in all construction zones 24/7 and drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present. Visit the Tollway's Work Zone Safety page.
